Spaceworks Tacoma will debut six new art installations during the Third Thursday Art Walk next week in downtown Tacoma.
The Artscapes installations mark the 12th round of exhibitions presented by Spaceworks Tacoma in the Woolworth Windows at South 11th Street and Broadway/South Commerce Street, as well as the Old Post Office Building. The artists include:
- Ellen Hochberg, whose installation of photo frames, videos, and a mannequin aims to ask bold questions about “invisible girls” undervalued by society;
- Christian French, who has built a small, makeshift stage from theater trussing flooring, on which he will orchestrate a non-narrative performance by arranging and assembling a variety of objects;
- Erin Dengerink, whose exhibit, titled “The Hole in Your Heart is a Portal to Another Dimension,” includes small, whimsical arrangements of human figurines interacting with objects all covered in white paint set against a black velvet backdrop;
- Spurred by the housing crisis, Kristin Giordano will present a series of suburban photographs taken on a toy camera in order to achieve a dreamlike, nostalgic quality that reinforced the ideals of the suburban landscape and the American Dream;
- Jennifer Chushcoff‘s photographs show the nine muses of her life in an endearing, interactive exhibit titled “Invoke the Muse,” which fits inside the display cases of downtown Tacoma’s Old Post Office Building;
- Finally, Jessica Spring has organized an exhibit of 10 large, bold, and spirited prints created during the annual Wayzgoose Printmaking Festival. The exhibit also includes a large accordion book illustrated by Jeremy Gregory.
The exhibits will be on display through Third Thursday in August 2014.
Artscapes applications were reviewed in October 2013 by a talented and devoted selection panel of: Kyle Dillehay, Art Instructor at Tacoma Community College; Dane Meyer, Dane Gregory Meyer Photography and Tacoma Arts Commissioner; Naomi Strom-Avila, Cultural Arts Specialist for the Tacoma Arts Program; and Frank Terrill, Artifact Restorer and Senior Engineer at the Tacoma Planning & Development Services Division.
