The Tacoma Dome, Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center, Murray Morgan Bridge, and Cheney Stadium will turn off their non-essential lights for Earth Hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sat., March 23. Tacoma is one of more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide that pledge to shut off their lights in support of the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour, which aims to raise awareness about climate change.

“Earth Hour is a great opportunity for Tacoma residents to join the City in demonstrating how we are working together to reduce the risk of climate change and to showcase individual contributions to the larger solution,” said Tacoma City Councilmember David Boe.

Tacoma residents can participate in Earth Hour by turning off their non-essential lights and also spread the word by inviting friends and neighbors to do the same. Learn more about the worldwide Earth Hour initiative online at EarthHour.org.

“The issue of climate change is important to the City of Tacoma,” said Tacoma City Manager T.C. Broadnax. He noted that since signing the Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement in 2007 and developing the City’s first Climate Action Plan in 2008, the City of Tacoma has embraced sustainability throughout its operations and in the community by reducing its fuel, electricity and paper use internally and installing electric vehicle charging stations, bike lanes and infrastructure. “We’ve made great strides in reducing our environmental footprint and we continue to be progressive in finding ways to make a difference and lead by example.”
