On Wednesday, the Sound Transit contractor on the D to M Streets Sounder construction project lifted and placed a 100-foot-long, 100,000-pound steel girder that will serve as the rail bridge over Pacific Avenue. The span placement marked a significant milestone in the construction project that will extend Sounder commuter rail service to South Tacoma and Lakewood beginning late next year. The Sound Transit contractor, MidMountain Contractors, Inc., used a 300-ton Ness Crane to erect the steel bridge. The middle span of the bridge was installed in two sections. Lifting and placement of these two sections took about an hour each.
