Tacoma has been named a Bicycle Friendly Community and certified at a Bronze Level by the League of American Bicyclists. Tacoma is recognized for improving the conditions and opportunities for bicycling and is one of 214 named as Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFC) in 47 states.
The BFC program recognizes investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.
“This is a perfect award to celebrate during Bike Month,” said Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland. “We have made significant progress to improve alternative transportation options like bicycling, and it is great to have that progress recognized.”
Achievements that helped lead to the Bicycle Friendly Community Award include installation of 96 on-street bike racks; partnership with Downtown On the Go! to create Tacoma’s first public bike cage; a Safe Routes to School grant for Sheridan Elementary and development of the Stadium High School bike club.
