Here is a look at some local Veterans Day (Nov. 11) events that will honor U.S. military service personnel:
Metro Parks Tacoma will offer free admission to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park for all individuals who are currently serving or have honorably served in the U.S. military (immediate family members will receive half-off general admission). Bring your active military/veteran identification card, discharge papers, DD214s, or any other proof of honorable US military service with you to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park. The Tacoma Historical Society and American Legion Post 8 will sponsor the Ninth Annual Veterans Day observance at 11:11 a.m. on Weds., Nov. 11, at War Memorial Park, located at Sixth Avenue and MacArthur Street. More information is available online here.
The Washington State History Museum will present a memorable tribute to past and present service members. Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs Director Alfie Alvarado will deliver the opening remarks for the event, which includes musical performances and a keynote program on Buffalo Soldiers in the West by renowned scholar Dr. Quintard Taylor. Bring a photo of a veteran in your life and share it on the Washington State History Museum’s Veterans Day Wall in the Grand Lobby, along with your thoughts on What Veterans Day Means to Me. The event begins at 1 p.m. on Weds., Nov. 11, at the Washington State History Museum, located at 1911 Pacific Ave., in downtown Tacoma. The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber and Facebook will host the free Boost Your Business seminar for Tacoma veteran- and military family-owned small businesses. Congressman Derek Kilmer plans to welcome visitors, and attendees will have the opportunity to meet with representatives of local business development organizations and hear about community resources during a networking session. The seminar will include a presentation by a Facebook small business expert on the latest Facebook best practices and strategies for success. A question and answer session will follow, featuring a panel of local small business people that will share their Facebook tips, tricks, and suggestions.
