Beginning today, Tacomas fireworks ban will be treated as a civil infraction with a $257 fine, rather than a misdemeanor resulting in jail time. Most fireworks violations are a class 2 civil infraction and can result in a $257 fine citizens using fireworks are still subject to arrest for other charges (i.e. arson, reckless burning, assault). Fireworks are permissible within city limits only when a permit has been issued for a sanctioned public event. Citizens wanting to report fireworks violations should call (253) 798-4722. If the fireworks violation appears to put people or property in immediate danger, call 911. Additional police officers will be dedicated to enforcing the new fireworks ban from June 28 through July 6.
