Groups of people trickled in and out of downtown Tacoma’s United States Postal Service museum, located at 1102 South A Street, Friday morning to view items presently available in a silent auction.
Dozens of items up for bid were available for viewing between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Friday, and included a railroad luggage cart, Underwood and Remington typewriters, ink press, Victor adding machines, roll top desk, USPS flag, and post office boxes.
Bids are welcomed until end of business day July 27.
According to USPS customer relations coordinator Dennis Shimomura, USPS administrators from Washington, D.C., removed items of interest from the museum earlier this year. Similarly, some items were secured by the Washington State History Museum for its collection.
The auction is a sign that changes are underway at the downtown post office.
Earlier this year, USPS announced it planned to relocate the current post office — which includes retail services, post office boxes, and a distribution center — into leased space near downtown. It would also relocate the distribution center to Fife. Once these relocation activities are completed, USPS plans to sell the historic building and adjacent parking lots.
