More than 4,000 citizens were inducted into the Pierce County Voters Hall of Fame Sept. 16 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Center.
The event, which featured Gov. Chris Gregoire and Secretary of State Sam Reed as speakers, was started in 2001 for citizens who have voted for 60 years, and was staffed by Election Division employees and 30 elected officials who volunteered as a way to personally recognize the honorees.
Chair Terry Lee of the Pierce County Council County read a proclamation declaring Pierce County Voters Hall of Fame Day.
This year’s 4,117 inductees brings the total to 26,978. The first year’s class numbered 14,383 inductees followed by 4,120 in 2003 and 4,358 in 2005. Each honoree was presented a lapel pin and a commemorative booklet containing memorable voting experiences provided by this year’s inductees.
