This year the Index covered a variety of memorable stories and moments.
For the first time ever, the newspaper embarked on a series of interviews with the candidates for Tacoma City Council. Twelve people ran for four seats on Council, and the Index met individually with each person for a sit-down interview — Who they were? Why were they running? What were the important issues? The series ran between February and August, and proved popular with readers.
Another first for the Index: it received the award for outstanding achievement in media from the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. The topic has been of ongoing interest to the paper because of a large number of individuals and groups in Tacoma who work hard to raise awareness of the city’s history and the value of preservation.
Today’s print edition of the Index includes a three-page, nine-photo feature that recaps some of the memorable photos and stories this year.
