The City of Tacoma’s Human Services Commission has recommended allocating approximately $4.3 million over the next biennium toward organizations that provide community services citywide. Additionally, the commission has recommended approximately $384,000 over the next biennium for organizations that serve youth through curfew support programs.

The recommendations were presented Nov. 20 during a special meeting of Tacoma City Council’s Public Safety, Human Services, and Education Committee. The full City Council is expected to review the recommendations during its study session Nov. 25, and make a decision on funding when it votes on the city’s final biennium budget next month.

According to information provided to the council committee, approximately $3.2 million was requested in community service funds for 2009 (approximately $2.1 million has been recommended), and $386,694 was requested in curfew support program funding ($192,106 has been recommended). Similarly, the Human Services Commission received funding requests from a variety of agencies for 75 different programs that serve community services (63 were recommended for funding). The commission also received funding requests from seven agencies for eight programs that provide curfew support services (four were recommended for funding).

The commission scored each program on a scale of 0 to 100.
