Commuters traveling on 128th Street East in the South Hill area of Puyallup will experience road closures and construction delays as part of the ongoing road improvement project. On Monday, March 29, 128th Street East was closed. However, 86th Avenue East remains open for crossing 128th Street East. Travelers should use the detour route on either Woodland Avenue or 94th Avenue East, or use an alternate route.
On March 30-31, 128th Street East will be restricted to alternating one-way traffic. Traffic congestion is expected.
Thursday through Saturday, April 1-3, 128th Street East will be completely closed and travelers should use the detour route.
During this construction phase, travel will be delayed and commuters should use extra caution around workers and equipment.
Construction Engineering Supervisor Henry Gertje says, “Pierce County Public Works and Utilities appreciates the public’s patience with the disruptions. If the weather cooperates between March 29 and April 3, the intersection of 86th and 128th should be mostly complete. Please use detour routes around the project site during this time to avoid being delayed.”
Improvements to 128th Street East include adding left turn lanes in all four directions, adding concrete curbs, gutters, and porous concrete sidewalks, adding an enclosed storm drain system as well as enhancing existing storm water treatment and storage facilities, and adding a new traffic signal.
“After construction, drivers and pedestrians should experience improved safety and reduced congestion at the intersection,” says Brian Ziegler, Public Works and Utilities director.
