After serving two five-year terms as chair of the University of Puget Sounds Board of Trustees, William T. Weyerhaeuser relinquished his duties at the boards meeting on May 16.
Weyerhaeuser was named to the board of trustees in 1978 and has been chair since 1993.
Weyerhaeuser has served as president of the board of the Tacoma Art Museum, and on The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation board.
He is immediate past president of the Pacific Harbors Council, Boy Scouts of America, among other volunteer activities.
In April 2003, the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB), recognized Weyerhaeuser by presenting him with a Distinguished Service Award in Trusteeship.
The award recognizes the 50,000 citizens who volunteer on the boards of the nations colleges and universities.
It is given annually to one board member from a public and one from an independent institution.
Elected to succeed Weyerhaeuser is Deanna Watson Oppenheimer, president of Washington Mutual, Inc., Banking and Financial Services Group.
As a Tacoman, it has meant a great deal to chair Puget Sounds board during the past 10 years and to see the university grow in the many ways it serves our students, Weyerhaeuser said. Under Deannas guidance, I am confident its best days lie ahead.
