TPU management review
The City Council and Public Utility Board will hear a presentation on Tacoma Public Utilities’ recently completed 10-year management review, required by the City Charter. The Barrington-Wellesley Group completed the review, which covers two main areas: management of the organization and governance of Tacoma Public Utilities. The public may attend the study session, but the council will not take comment.

CVB funding
Will a $700,000 contribution to the Tacoma Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) help bring more outsiders into Tacoma over the next two years? The City Council will consider that when it reviews a proposal to help fund the CVB, using money generated from the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center. Some of the CVB goals include:

– Scheduling long-term business for the convention center;

– Increasing the number of tours and individual visitors to Tacoma;

– Promoting Tacoma as a destination city;

– Marketing Tacoma and locations outside of the City to film scouts;

– Developing and distributing information to attract visitors ;

– Fostering effective media relationships; and

– Stimulating cultural tourism.

The council will take public comment before voting on the measure.

Street to honor Rev. Earnest Brazill
A proposed tribute to legendary peacemaker Rev. Earnest S. Brazill may become reality when the City Council considers a resolution to rename the portion of South 12th Street between Tacoma Avenue South and South Sprague Avenue to “E.S. Brazill Street.” Rev. Brazill served as the pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church from 1955 to 1999, founded the Tacoma Ministerial Alliance, chaired the Tacoma Human Relations Commission and served as a Tacoma Housing Authority Commissioner. Reverend Brazill also served as president and lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Reverend Brazill, best known for his devotion to improving his community, passed away in September 2000.

Chihuly Bridge of Glass reopened
The Chihuly Bridge of Glass reopened to the public June 5. The bridge boasts a fresh look, with new floor coating below the Crystal Towers, painted benches, cleaned artwork casings and a good scrubbing all over. During its closure, the City completed all of the scheduled work on the bridge. The bridge will now remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Cleanup of extraction wells
The City Council will vote on a proposed $363,600 three-year contract with Water Recovery Services, Inc., for rehabilitation work on groundwater extraction wells at the Tacoma Landfill.
