Beliz Brother from Seattle and David Franklin from Indianola were selected from among 67 applicants in a competitive process to create artwork for the new Cheney Stadium. The review panel offered two commissions. Brother received the $160,000 commission that was open to applications from the western contiguous states, and Franklin received the other commission for $50,000 that was limited to artists from the South Puget Sound. The projects are funded through the City of Tacoma’s Municipal Art Program, which dedicates 1 percent of construction costs to the creation of public art. “The most interesting aspect of the project is how Beliz and Davids work will blend in with the architecture and ambiance of the ballpark,” said Tacoma Rainiers President Aaron Artman. “Having seen some of their other work, we’re really looking forward to seeing the finished products at Cheney.” The artwork will be installed in time for opening day on April 14, 2011.
