Pierce County officials are mulling a plan to hike the sales tax by 0.3 percent, which would make the countys rate the highest in the state.
The proposal would boost the budget by as much as $25 million per year and would pay for police and protection and courts.
The measure could be placed on the ballot for a vote as early as November.
The proposed increase would mean Tacoma residents would pay 9.1 cents in sales tax on every dollar.
