Pierce County property owners wanting to challenge residential property valuation changes made this year by the Assessor-Treasurers Office have until Aug. 18 to do so.
The value-change notices were mailed July 18 to owners of 220,000 parcels.
State law requires that taxpayer petitions to the Pierce County Board of Equalization be filed or postmarked within 30 days of the mailing date.
However, the July 18 date was inadvertently omitted from the notice, creating confusion for some taxpayers who disagree with the Assessor-Treasurer’s Office determination of their properties true and fair value.
We regret the date omission, said Assessor-Treasurer Ken Madsen. It is important that taxpayers know the deadline for petitioning the Board of Equalization for reviews of their new property values.
The taxpayer petition form can be obtained in person at the Board of Equalization office in the Public Services Building (County Annex), 2401 S. 35th St., Room 176, Tacoma, WA 98409.
It is also available online at www.piercecountywa.org/boe. To print, fill out in duplicate and mail to the board.
Value change notices arent sent to owners of properties for which values didn’t change.
The statutory appeal deadline of July 1 applies to those properties.
The July 18 value change notices are for the 2003 assessment year.
The values established for the 2003 assessment year affects property taxes payable in 2004.
Additional value change mailings are planned for August and September. All value change notices subsequent to July 18 will contain the mailing date.
