Spaceworks Tacoma is proud to present a new round of Artscapes installations. Nine new installations will add color, light and activity to otherwise vacant spaces in downtown Tacoma. These festive installations can be found on Broadway between 9th and 11th streets, at Commerce and 11th streets and at Pacific Avenue and 11th Street. This round will also include an installation in the Tollbooth Gallery, a tiny video and wheat paste gallery at Broadway and 11th Street.
Two special community partnerships have been formed for this round of Artscapes: the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation is displaying work by this year’s Foundation of Art Award nominees and will host a reception on Nov. 30 highlighting this year’s winner, Jessica Spring (950 Pacific Ave.); and Metro Parks Tacoma is presenting a large community-created dragon that will be paraded through the streets at First Night to celebrate the New Year (912 Broadway).
“These installations come just in time for the holiday season and are perfect for a winter stroll downtown — many include fabulous light components and have strong ties to the local community,” says Amy McBride, Arts Administrator.
Artists featured include: Diane Hansen, Brian Hutcheson, Maria Meneses, Kelly June Mitchell, Mary Rothlisberger and Lauren McCleary, RSVR visual research (Ian Campbell and Benjamin Gray), Janette Ryan, the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation and Metro Parks Tacoma.
Spaceworks Tacoma is a joint initiative of the City of Tacoma, Shunpike, and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce designed to activate empty storefronts and vacant space in downtown Tacoma. The initiative makes no- and low-cost temporary space available to artists, fledgling creative entrepreneurs, organizations, and community groups who transform vacant spaces through artist residencies, creative enterprises and art installations (artscapes).
