Praise for Tacoma Power's new substation

Tacoma Power’s new Canyon Substation was named a 2012 Excellent 10 project Friday by the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County. Projects that are named to this list are considered key drivers of jobs, capital investment or other important community development in the region.

The new substation, at 4712 180th St. E. in Frederickson, provides electric power for about 25,000 Tacoma Power customers, along with about 15,000 customers of neighboring utilities. The substation is a $21 million project, of which the Bonneville Power Administration funded about 40 percent.

The substation aims to provide increased reliability and low-cost power capacity to support the attraction of industrial growth and other supportive infrastructure in the Frederickson Industrial Park and enhance the quality of life throughout the Frederickson and Graham communities, as well as the city of Tacoma.  The substation was planned and built by a work force that mostly resides within Pierce County.

“We’re very pleased,” said Dave Ward, Tacoma Power Transmission and Distribution manager. “The substation was an important addition to our system and to the people in Frederickson and Graham.”
