Snow and ice storms last winter severely damaged the historic 1906 Knights of Pythias Temple in downtown Tacoma.

“An ice dam allowed water to leak along interior walls,” wrote a Historic Tacoma spokesperson in an e-mail to its members on Monday afternoon. “Wall and ceiling papers have peeled back, finished woodwork has water streaks, plaster has become loose in some areas, pocket doors have become swollen from the water, and historic books were damaged as well.”

Donations are being accepted to help pay for repairs. Checks can be made payable to “Knights of the Pythias” and mailed to 924 Broadway, Tacoma, WA 98402. For more information, contact Phil Blackledge at philblackledge@gmail.com .

The Knights of Pythias Temple is located on Broadway between South Ninth Street and South 11th Street. The building was designed by architect Frederick Henry Heath and is listed on the local and national historic registers.
