Tacoma residents will have an opportunity to watch Tacoma City Councilmembers conduct live interviews of seven applicants vying for the vacant City Council District 2 position during a noon study session Tues., Jan. 15, which will be televised on TV Tacoma.

The candidates include Monica Alexander, Philip Cowan, David D’ Aniello, Carolyn Edmonds, Jon Higley, Patricia Lecy-Davis, and Robert Thoms. Each will have three minutes to describe their interest in serving on City Council, their qualifications, what sets them apart from other applicants, and what they believe the City of Tacoma should prioritize.

(UPDATE: According to Tacoma City Manager T. C. Broadnax, each applicant will have three minutes to give a presentation that includes answers to the following questions: Why do you want to serve on the Tacoma City Council? What separates you from the other applicants and what experience and/or skill set will you bring to the Council? What should be the City of Tacoma’s priorities? Why do you want to serve on the Tacoma City Council? What separates you from the other applicants and what experience and/or skill set will you bring to the Council? What should be the City of Tacoma’s priorities?)

Councilmembers will then have an opportunity to ask additional questions. At the end of the study session, councilmember will go into an executive session to discuss applicant qualifications. Later that day, at the 5 p.m. city council meeting, a motion may be made to appoint an applicant to the vacant position for council consideration.

District 2 generally represents northeast Tacoma, the industrial area around the Port of Tacoma and downtown Tacoma. The position was vacated after Councilmember Jake Fey was elected to the state House of Representatives in November. Effective Jan. 1, 2013, councilmembers receive an annual salary of $41,269.
