Tacoma City Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday at City Hall to be briefed on activities and results related to Tacoma’s “Safe, Clean and Attractive” program.

The program, which dates back to spring 2008, aims to work with local organizations and groups to invest in their local youth, providing them more opportunities for enriching activities as well as exposure to positive role models; enhance cooperation between City of Tacoma departments that own street equipment to spruce up sidewalks throughout Tacoma; and empower citizens in interested neighborhoods to create a sustainable plan for beautifying their surroundings. According to city staff, between April 2008 and June 2009, the program brought citizens and city staffers together to work within existing budgets to help bring about an 18 percent reduction in crime and eliminated over 500 tons of debris during community clean-ups. Additionally, the city has seen a reduction in violent crime and property crime as a result of efforts related to the program, according to city staff.

Councilmembers will not take public comment during the study session, which will be held on Tues., April 9 at 12 p.m. in Room 16 of Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St. Audio from the meeting will be broadcast live on TV Tacoma and online at tvtacoma.com.
