The City of Tacoma’s Public Works Department recently applied for 11 grants totaling nearly $27 million to help pay for a variety of transportation improvement projects.
Among the big-ticket grant requests:
- Nearly $8.7 million to replace one segment of the Puyallup River Bridge;
- Nearly $4.5 million to provide curbs, gutters, and sidewalks along a 13-block section of South Orchard Street;
- Nearly $4 million to replace the bridge deck and install seismic upgrades on the East 34th Street Bridge;
- Approximately $1.9 million to construct a shared-use path as part of the Historic Water Ditch Trail project;
- $1.8 million to replace a deteriorated segment of the Foss Waterway esplanade.
The grants, which would require approximately $4.2 million in local matching funds, were made to the Puget Sound Regional Council and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Bridge Replacement Advisory Committee (BRAC).
