Pierce County officials will host a public forum this month to provide local residents with an opportunity to learn about the County’s proposed plan to build the new Pierce County General Services Building on the site of the former Puget Sound Hospital, which is located near South 36th Street and Pacific Avenue (see “City Hall News: Historic building nominations, charter review town hall, and Pierce County campus plan,” Tacoma Daily Index, April 4, 2014; “County to close former Puget Sound Hospital,” Tacoma Daily Index, Sept. 2, 2010; and “County celebrates centennial of former hospital,” Tacoma Daily Index, Aug. 5, 2005).
According to Pierce County officials, the new building would consolidate 18 programs that currently operate in 12 locations into one facility. The eight-story building would be owned by a non-profit corporation and leased to Pierce County, which would take ownership at the end of the term, Pierce County officials report.
The public forum will be held on Thurs., Jan. 22, between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., at the Pierce County Annex, located at 2401 S. 35th St., in Tacoma. Councilmembers Connie Ladenburg, Derek Young, and Rick Talbert will join Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy, Pierce County department heads, and representatives of project developer Wright Runstad.
