We’re inviting you to share your tree story! We’ve created a Facebook “event” where you can post your story in the comments, and you’ll be entered to win one of three prizes.

Why Tree Stories? Sharing tree stories helps us place a spotlight on trees and become aware of their significance in all our lives.

During some of our arborist-led programs the participants share their stories with each other. We thought it’d be fun to be able to share our stories in a wider forum.

What is a Tree Story? Did you ever climb a tree, plant a tree, have a favorite tree, or name a tree?

Share your own personal connection to a tree — either your “earliest tree memory” or “a significant tree memory.” Sometimes simple stories are the most profound. What’s your tree story?

Tacoma Giants Part 1: Trees of Point Defiance Park, November 11
Meet Mik and the Beanstalk. Mik is a Certified Arborist happy to share his knowledge of the trees of Point Defiance with you; and the Beanstalk is a 186-foot Pseudotsuga menziesii, a.k.a. Douglas-fir, located a stone’s throw away from Fort Nisqually. $4 per person

Tacoma Giants Part 2: Immersion Tree Walk, November 11
Immerse yourself into the world of living natural history and fall in love with the infinite shades of green in this in-depth look into the biology and history of the trees of Point Defiance. Program requires about 1 mile of walking. $8 per person.

Ranger-Led Nature Walk, November 4
Meet the Park Ranger at the Rhododendron Garden at 1 p.m. for an exploration of nature in Point Defiance Park. Free. No pre-registration necessary. Details at www.PointDefiancePark.org

Family Nature Walks, October 28, November 4, 11, 18
Explore Tacoma’s Parks during these free naturalist-led walks. Discover amazing plants and animals and how they adapt to the seasons. Walks are organized and led by Tacoma Nature Center staff. Free.

Self-Guided Champion Tree Tour, Wright Park
You can pick up a free Champion Tree Tour Booklet in the Conservatory gift shop and then stroll around Wright Park to find its 18 champion trees. There are 450 other trees at Wright Park, each bearing a label identifying it by name.

Self-Guided Point Defiance Hike
Point Defiance Park’s 760-acres are home to natural forest, saltwater beaches and spectacular views offering numerous possibilities for recreation, education and communing with nature. Visit PointDefiancePark.org to download a map.

Trails and Paths
Commune with nature on wooded trails throughout Tacoma. Visit metroparkstacoma.org/trails to discover parks and open spaces with paths and trails of various lengths.
