Tacoma, Wash. – The Village Senior Living, in partnership with Right at Home®, will host a Virtual Dementia Tour® on Thursday, October 25, 2018, to help individuals better understand what it feels like for those who live with dementia. Tours will be available in 15-minute increments between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. and pre-registration is highly encouraged. The event complements an Open House to celebrate The Village’s new memory care neighborhood.
Right at Home® Pierce County supports Second Wind Dreams® and will provide the Virtual Dementia Tour® (VDT®)—a scientifically proven method that builds sensitivity and awareness in individuals by temporarily altering participants’ physical and sensory abilities with props and circumstances, which simulate changes associated with the physical and cognitive impairments of aging.
After being donned in VDT components, participants are placed in a “normal” living situation and asked to perform simple tasks. Within seconds of receiving instruction, the participants experience and react with evident, dementia-like behaviors. This experience will equip participants with sensory deficits that impact the ability to verbalize thoughts, complete repetitive action, follow instructions and interact with others in a simulated environment. Participants will gain meaningful experiences with attempts to walk in another’s shoes, and more clearly understand causes for depression and withdrawal in the elderly.
