About the Courage Awards: Each year, the Crosscut Courage Awards recognize those among us who have shown bold leadership and enduring courage, despite personal or organizational risk. For the 2019 awards, we will be honoring leaders who have reached across social, cultural, political or ideological lines for the greater good. Thank you for taking a moment to nominate a deserving individual in our community.

Awardees will be recognized in the categories of:
Courage in Public Service
(Past awardees: The Gang of Four, Colleen Echohawk, Kaaren Andrews, Eastside Catholic High School Student Protesters, Starcia Ague and Lauren Davis)
Courage in Elected Office
(Past awardees: Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Tim Burgess)
Courage in Arts & Culture
(Past awardees: Doris Koo, Friends of 88.5, Marcus Green, Valerie Curtis-Newton, Andrew Russell and Creative Justice)
Courage in Business
(Past awardees: Doris Koo, Richard Romero, Taylor Hoang, Community Sourced Capital, Bob Donegan and Beto Yarce)
Courage in Technology
(Past awardees: David Harris, Trish Millines-Dziko)
David Brewster Lifetime Achievement Award
(Past awardees: Bill Ruckelshaus, Martha Choe, Joni Earl, Billy Frank Jr. and Gov. Daniel J. Evans)
Nomination Timeline and Process
Nominations will close on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.
Crosscut will convene the Courage Awards Advisory Council consisting of civic, community and business leaders to review all nominations and select finalists. The Crosscut editorial team will conduct interviews with finalists and references, which will inform a final vote by the Advisory Council to select this year’s honorees.
All honorees will be celebrated at the Crosscut Courage Awards Breakfast in October 2019.
Award Criteria
Ability to demonstrate, share, and live courage throughout our community by:
– Encouraging dialogue, cooperation and/or understanding
– Establishing partnerships, coalitions, or collaborative efforts despite criticism or risk to reputation
– Showing uncommon commitment to serving the community
– Inspiring and galvanizing others to reach outside existing bubbles or across lines
– Taking the long view to build a stronger, more equitable Northwest
-David Brewster Lifetime Achievement Award: An individual with ties to Seattle (has resided in the region at some point) or whose work has positively impacted the region or the country. While this event has deep ties to the Seattle area, we encourage you to consider those who may not currently reside here. We hope broadening the scope of this award will yield an even greater number of high caliber nominees for consideration.
