Despite the scientific progress on many fronts, there are surprisingly few ways out there that can stop and reverse hair loss.
Considering what a huge problem it is, and what a money maker it would be for the company that solves the problem, then it obviously means it’s a complex and individual issue.

The History Of RU58841
The compound was developed by French scientist way back in the 1970s. They developed it as one of several potential treatments for prostate cancer. So it was never even conceived, or thought of, as a hair loss prevention product.
Designed to be used as a liquid or cream topically, to minimize side effects and target the prostate, it was actually found to not have any particular effect on cancer cell proliferation.
But what they did fine during the trials is a lot of the people involved noted hair growth. Intrigued, they found that this even applied to people who were previously bald and had evidently dead hair follicles. They were starting to grow hair again.
A french company called ProStraken purchased the rights to the chemical, renaming it PSK3841 for their own research into using RU58841 as a hair loss treatment.
It then went through phase 2 clinical trials in humans, with plans for full phase 3 trials after completion. The company even targeted a commercial release by the end of 2010, and announced this. But for reasons that are still unclear, due to no research papers being released summarizing the clinical trials completed, it never came to market.
However, it is available as a grey market research chemical. And a decade of use as an unofficial treatment to combat hair loss has shown fantastic effects with only limited side effects.
But there are potential side effects to be aware of (and these may be why they decided it couldn’t be commercially successful), and I’ll talk to you about those later.
How RU58841 Works On The Scalp And Hair Follicles
Before I go into details on how RU58841 works on the scalp hair receptors to produce its results, let’s just give you a snapshot of everything you need to know:

- Side effects are minimal (but not non-existent)
- Its main effect is to encourage higher levels of follicular growth

Although men can lose hair for several reasons, the overwhelming reason is the increase in levels of a hormone called DHT, a more potent version of testosterone.
Testosterone can get converted into DHT at higher than normal levels, by being converted to 5-alpha-reductase.
Normally, only 5% of testosterone is transformed into DHT, but higher levels can cause problems, one of which is to basically kill off the hair follicles more rapidly than normal.
The DHT binds with androgen receptors in the hair follicles under the scalp. As this increases, it starts to change gene function. It’s unclear still exactly what the mechanism and progress is, but the end result is that the hair follicles start to respond differently.
The anagen cycle, basically, the hair growth cycle, is altered so that it becomes increasingly shorter. This results in thinner and weaker hair regrowth and male pattern hair loss over each successful hair growth cycle.
RU58841 is topically applied to the scalp. It’s an anti-androgenic substance, which means that it starts to counter the effects of DHT in the hair follicles over several weeks and months. Working its way into the skin, it will bind to the androgen receptors in the active follicles.
Although it’s not understood how, over time, it slows the ability of DHT to affect the hair follicles. Basically, it stops the binding process to some degree.
Doing this helps to slow cellular change and aids recovery. The reverse in this lengthening anagen cycle can be quite minor, but it can also lead to not only a full recovery but can also cause an increase in the growth phase which will give stronger and thicker hair than has ever been had before by that individual.
RU58841 Before & After Results: What’s Typical Or Realistic?
As I just said, because it is a topically applied liquid solution, results can be very inconsistent. It depends on how it’s absorbed, how is it reaching scalp hair receptors, and how well your body responds. Plus, it also depends on how efficient you are at applying it.
In some people, its effects can be very minor. You will see slightly better and thicker hair growth.
However, in others, it can lead to a full reversal and even a situation where the regrowth is longer, stronger, and thicker than it ever was before.
Overall though, based on my own use of this fantastic supplement, alongside looking at reliable anecdotal reviews and discussion online, this seems to be the most typical level of RU58841 hair loss reversal achieved:

So as you can see, it’s generally favorable to use. Because it’s topical, and you are using it topically to offset problems around the body with androgen levels, it’s tougher to pin down consistency before and after typical results.

Do The Research Studies Back Up People’s Claims?
I’ve talked you through the RU58841 before and after results, which you can expect anecdotally. But does the research back up what I’ve told you here?
Because it’s never been through full phase 3 human trials, nor put to market for hair loss prevention, then the scientific study evidence is obviously limited, and almost non-existent in humans.
There was an article in something called the “Journal of Dermatology” about the study they conducted, which did compare two antiandrogen compounds. It looked at the evidence for follicular recovery. It also looked at the evidence of serum level DHT level changes.
The comparison was between RU58841 in one small comparison study group, and Finasteride administered orally in the second group. I hasten to add that the study groups were of bald-scalped monkeys; basically aging apes!
In the Finasteride group an 88% increase in recovering follicles and an overall normalizing of the anagen cycle was observed.
In the second group, given RU58841 topically, a 103% increase was observed. So it was significantly better than Finasteride.
Testing DHT levels, it was also found that strong topical doses of RU58841 did not observably change levels of androgens.
Another study in mice also observed significant levels of increased hair follicle activity.
From looking at several animal studies, what was important for me in my journey, was the note that a 5% RU58841 dose density in the topically applied cream/liquid produces the best results in 6-12 months.
How To Apply Ru58841: Application, Dosage, Length Of Time To Use It
RU58841 is a topical application either as a cream or a liquid. Sometimes, it comes as a raw powder you have to mix with the carrier liquid. For me, it’s just easier and less messy to buy a liquid version.
If you do need to use raw powder, then you can mix it with ethanol. However, this can dry the scalp out a bit and can cause skin irritation. An alternative is to use propylene glycol.
You can use it on its own, or you can even mix it with Minoxidil and apply both topically using the same solution.
However you apply RU58841, however, you buy it, make sure that it has a dose density of at least 5%. Don’t worry about going much higher than that though, because it doesn’t seem to have dose-dependent benefits much above that level.
Thankfully, the RU 58841 liquid I buy is dosed at 50 mg/mL, a density of 5%. I’ll tell you more about that later.
Here’s the method for dosing and using RU58841:
1. Wash the hair with baby shampoo and then dry it. Wait 30 minutes and then apply the solution.
2. Using latex gloves, conservatively apply the liquid across the scalp, particularly focusing on the worst areas.
3. Apply the liquid once per day, preferably in the evening before you go to bed.
4. Continue like this for at least six months. After that, if you aren’t seeing any results then keep going at once per day, or start using it once every 2-3 days.
RU58841 Vs Finasteride Vs Minoxidil
Finasteride and liquid Minoxidil are the two most common treatments to prevent hair loss for men.
Both are more androgenic in the side effects they produce, and both are taken differently.
In the limited studies, RU58841 has actually been shown to produce better results at six months, and the other two had better results earlier.
For me, mix one or more together to use (topically and orally, or both topically) and look for the best results at around six months onwards.
RU58841 Side Effects: Does It Affect Testosterone?
RU58841 is topically applied to the scalp, which means its effects on androgens should be very minimal.
However, because it binds the androgen receptors in the scalp, it blocks all androgens on those receptors. It can also get into the blood vessels from the scalp, even in small amounts.
If you are using high doses every day, then there is definitely the possibility that the metabolite it produces (Cyanonilutamide) could enter the bloodstream. This metabolite has been shown to have strong anti-androgenic effects.
