2005-2006 biennial budget
Members of the City Council will continue discussion of the 2005-2006 biennial budget, beginning the review of the categorization of city services as essential and/or desirable. The process will continue at the Aug. 18 budget workshop at 4:30 p.m. The public may attend, but the council will not take public comment. CityPost (Channel 85 on Click!, Channel 77 on Comcast) will air the audio portion of the study session live.

Lease extension for Rainiers
An amendment to extend the lease agreement with Georges Pastime, Inc., for the exclusive management, operations and use of Cheney Stadium through 2006 is scheduled for City Council consideration. If approved, the agreement would help keep the Tacoma Rainiers playing at Cheney Stadium through the end of the 2006 season. A separate agreement would maintain the teams affiliation with the Seattle Mariners over the same time period.
Search for new City Manager
The City Council will consider a resolution that would direct the preparation of a Request for Qualifications to solicit a national firm to assist the council in the development of a recruitment plan for the selection of the next Tacoma City Manager. The resolution also calls for the current City Manager to have cost estimates prepared for each phase of the upcoming search and selection process. Time will be set aside for public comment on this and other agenda items at the beginning of the meeting.
Brownfields Revolving Loan program
The consent agenda includes an interlocal agreement with the Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development that would expand the Brownfields Revolving Loan program to include the cleanup of sites containing hazardous substances, petroleum and controlled substances. If approved, the agreement could make it easier to clean up and reinvest in brownfields properties sites where serious pollution or contamination precludes redevelopment or reuse of the property.
City Charter For and Against
The City Council is scheduled to appoint individuals to committees that will prepare the For and Against statements for each of the proposed amendments to the City Charter. The statements will appear in the voters pamphlet for the general election on Nov. 2.
