1. Self-determination forum scheduled for May 20
The 2005 Pierce County Self-Determination Forum will be held on Friday, May 20 at Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is open to the public, including parents, people with disabilities, self-advocates, providers, professionals, educators and community members.
Speakers John and Connie Lyle O’Brien and Nancy Ward will discuss self-determination, person-centered planning, school and community inclusion, and self-advocacy. Ten workshops will cover such topics as pathways to employment, development of Individualized Education Plans, self-determination in schools and community, transition services, self-employment and Division of Developmental Disabilities services.
Opportunities are evolving for individuals with developmental disabilities to direct their own resources and supports. Instead of being directed by others, the ultimate goal is for individuals with developmental disabilities to create their own plans with their family and community, which is self determination.
The forum is sponsored by Self-Advocates of Washington, the Community Inclusion Program, and Pierce County Human Services. Scholarships are available for persons with a disability/self-advocates and parents.
Registration information can be obtained by contacting Betty Johnston at bjohnston@washingtonpave.com or Sandy Trujillo at strujillo@washingtonpave.com or 253-565-2266 (v/tty) at Washington PAVE.
