Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium continues its centennial observance with release of a colorful booklet that tells the story of the zoo’s first century in words and pictures.

The centennial booklets are on sale for $5.95 at the Zoo’s Plaza Gifts.
Readers will meet some of the charismatic animals who have lived at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium over the years, including a friendly harbor seal named Dub Dub, black bears Romeo and Juliet, Cindy the elephant and ET the walrus.

The 36-page booklet also details the Zoo’s development over the years from a collection of curiosities to a modern conservation center.

“The world-class zoo and aquarium that exists today is a testament to the strong support we have received over the past 100 years from Tacoma and Pierce County residents,” said Aaron Pointer, president of the Metro Parks Tacoma Board of Commissioners. “The zoo is a true community treasure.”

“100 Years at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium” was produced by the Zoo staff with assistance from Tacoma Public Library and Metro Parks Tacoma historians Doreen Beard-Simpkins and William Rhind.
