Laughter is the Best Medicine is the theme for this years Senior Citizen Awareness Day on Aug. 24 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall. The 34th annual event will honor Tacoma and Pierce County seniors and their families with a day of fun, education, information and entertainment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Each year, approximately 1,500 seniors and their families attend Senior Citizen Awareness Day. More than 70 profit and non-profit service agencies, organizations, and businesses will participate in the event by providing information to seniors and their families about services. This is an opportunity for seniors and their families to meet directly with the providers of services that are able to enhance, improve and increase their independence in the community.
Other activities include special performances beginning at 10:30 a.m. by the Jazz Disciples Band, Faye OBrien as Minnie Pearl, and the Wrinkles of Washington. The dance band A Touch of Class will perform from 2 to 4 p.m. A Booth BINGO game will start at 10 a.m. and prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Since there will be no boxed lunches for seniors offered this year, the concessions booths will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with various food choices for individuals wishing to purchase lunch during their visit.
The Human Rights and Human Services Department organizes the Senior Citizen Awareness Day event. The community sponsors for this years event include: Korean Womens Association, Da Vita, R 4 Printing, Tacoma Power, Northwest Prime Time, the Tacoma Dome and The News Tribune.
