“The Associated General Contractors of Washington handed out 22 awards at its 15th Annual Safety & Construction Excellence Awards Banquet. The awards recognize top firms, projects and safety programs in the Washington construction industry in the period October 31, 1998, to January 25, 2000. Taking the top special recognition awards – the Safety Excellence Grand Award and the Construction Excellence Grand Award – were GLY Construction of Bellevue and Charter Construction of Seattle. Charter Construction took the Construction Excellence Grand Award for the Paradise Employee Dormitory at Mount Rainier National Park, for which Charter also won the New Building $2-5 Million Construction Award. Charter surmounted obstacles such as high elevation, ferocious weather, and long distances from suppliers to construct the technically complex dormitory. GLY took the Safety Excellence Grand Award for its construction safety programs. GLY was also winner of two other safety awards – Most Improved General Contractor Over 225,000 Worker Hours, and Outstanding General Contractor Over 225,000 Worker Hours. Sun Mountain Pool & Plaza Design Professional: BOE Architects The Wade Perrow Construction design/build team had to recognize not just the obstacles of a major renovation of an occupied resort but also the challenges of meeting the true needs of the user and owner at Sun Mountain Resort. Remodel/Tenant Improvement $2 – $5 Million Wade Perrow Construction, Inc., Gig Harbor.University of Puget Sound McIntyre Hall Design Professional: ZGF This complex, $2.5-million complete remodel of an existing academic building was completed in 12 weeks. Wade Perrow provided extensive pre-construction services, including detailed schematic estimating, building investigation, and value engineering options. Remodel/Tenant Improvement $5 – $10 Million Lease Crutcher Lewis, Seattle.Seattle Tennis Club Design Professional: NBBJ This project renovated an 1890’s building with numerous additions. It included extensive structural work to restore the integrity of older portions of the building. Remodel/Tenant Improvement Over $10 Million Turner Construction Company, Seattle.Rosen Building Design Professional: Arlan Collins, CNA Architecture This project consisted of the complete renovation of the Rosen Building.New Building $2 – $5 Million Charter Construction, Inc., Seattle.Paradise Employee Dormitory, Mt. Rainier National Park Design Professional: Paul Olson, Jones and Jones The Paradise Employee Dormitory is a technically complex building with ambitious aesthetic requirements.New Building $5 – $10 Million J. R. Abbott Construction, Inc., Seattle.Roosevelt Square Design Professional: Lance Mueller and Associates The Roosevelt Square Project is a three-story retail redevelopment wrapped around an existing, 80-year-old, three-story structure currently housing a Dania furniture store. J. R. Abbott had to find various solutions to keep the store open during construction, including designing and building freight and ramp systems that were able to be moved as needed. New Building Over $10 Million Lease Crutcher Lewis, Seattle.King Street Center Design Professional: NBBJ The greatest challenge in the completion of this project was in the fragility of the surrounding structures, infrastructures and neighborhoods. King Street Center has been called Seattle’s greenest building because of the innovative recycling techniques and materials used. Heavy/Highway/Utility Tri-State Construction Inc., Bellevue.SR 202 NE Ames Lake Road Vicinity This project provided for the improvement of .43 kilometer of SR 202 in King County by rebuilding the intersection, raising the mainline profile, realigning NE Ames Lake Road, installing illumination, constructing drainage improvements, replacing the Dry Creek cross culvert, and reconstructing and restructuring Dry Creek for salmon mitigation.
