Pierce County’s newest judge will bring honor to the Superior Court bench and the community, speakers at his swearing-in ceremony Dec. 9 told a packed courtroom.
Fife attorney John Hickman, whose appointment by Gov. Chris Gregoire was welcomed throughout the courthouse, was portrayed as even-tempered, courteous and honest by U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Strombom, who presented Hickman at the ceremony. Noting that being a judge is a significant responsibility, she said, “As a judge I want the community to be blessed by a judge of the highest honor. John Hickman will be that kind of judge in my opinion.”
Other speakers, including Superior Court Judge D. Gary Steiner, District Court Judge and former law partner Franklin Dacca, attorney Diana Kiesel, longshore union leader Vance Lelli and friend Arne Abrams, spoke of Hickman’s integrity, humor and commitment to family and friends. Superior Court Presiding Judge Stephanie Arend gave welcoming comments, introductions and closing remarks; and Clerk of the Superior Court Kevin Stock convened the court.
Hickman was joined for the ceremonial “robing” by his wife, Wendy, and sons, Matt and Jeff. He introduced his judicial assistant and court reporter, Connie J. Mangus and Laura Lee Venegas, respectively.
In announcing her selection of Hickman in November, Gregoire spoke of his reputation “as an honorable practictioner with the highest of ethics complemented by passion for the law and friendly demeanor.”
