Albertson's sale wins waiver

Federal regulators have cleared the sale of 80 Osco Drug stores owned by Boise-base Albertson’s to the parent company of Brooks Pharmacy, a New England chain.

The Federal Trade Commission said it was waiving the remainder of the waiting period for the sale by Albertson’s to Maxi Drug Inc. for $240 million, Albertson’s announced Wednesday.

Albertson’s is the nation’s number two food and drug retailer, with 2,492 stores in 37 states, including several in the Tacoma area.

Albertson’s has over 220,000 employees.

Brooks Pharmacy is the oldest drug-store chain in New England.
