Regular ferry service between Steilacoom and Anderson Island will resume today, according to Pierce County road workers. Crews worked all day Tuesday and completed repairs to the ramp system’s steel support structure and the electrical system. The system was damaged and knocked out of service during a windstorm early Friday.

The MV Christine Anderson was scheduled to depart Steilacoom at 5:45 a.m. this morning and make a stop at Ketron Island en route to Anderson Island. Eleven other round trips are scheduled each week day with the last run departing Anderson Island at 8 p.m. An estimated 700 people reside on the island this time of year.

An electrical switch won’t be delivered and installed until this morning, but that won’t prevent service from returning to normal schedule. “Until the switch is installed, the ramp apron will need to be hand-cranked. That may add a few minutes to the first few runs,” said Toby Rickman, deputy director of Pierce County Public Works and Utilities, which owns the dock and ferry MV Christine Anderson.

The 213-foot MV Christine Anderson carries a maximum 54 vehicles and 250 passengers.
