The Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously voted yesterday to nominate the Kress Building to the Tacoma Register of Historic Places.
The three-story building, located at 934-36 Broadway, was constructed in 1925 and is considered a link to Tacomas rich history of downtown commerce. Though rehabilitation is currently underway in one section of the building, the Kress is home to the Childrens Museum.
According to the Tacoma Public Librarys Northwest Room Web site, the Kress cost $100,000 to build 80 years ago, and was remodeled in 1957.
On Jan. 25, the Landmarks Commission voted to schedule the building for public comment. During yesterdays meeting, the commission made a motion to forward its nomination to the city council for designation as a historic landmark. The council will vote on the nomination in the near future.
