Welcome to the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival—a yearly video contest in which kid filmmakers create weird short movies that tell the entire stories of Newbery award-winning books in about 90 seconds.
For seven years we’ve screened the best kid-made movies annually in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and many other cities—including right here in Tacoma!
Make your FREE reservation for the TACOMA screening of this year’s 90-Second Newbery. The screening is hosted by children’s author James Kennedy (The Order of Odd-Fish) and Tacoma’s own Doug Mackey.
The movies we’ve received are hilarious, ingenious, and inspiring. We’ll be showing movies made by kids in Tacoma and some of the best from around the country.
This year, the Tacoma 90-Second Newbery will screen on Sunday, April 15, 2018 from 11 am-1:30 pm at the Blue Mouse Theatre (2611 N Proctor St). Tickets are free, however we recommend reserving your seat in advance to ensure admittance.
We rely on your donations to keep going. If you want us to keep doing this, please help us out! We run this film festival on a shoestring. No donation is too small. You can make your tax-deductible donation here: http://90secondnewbery.com/donate. The 90-Second Newbery Film Festival is under the fiscal sponsorship of Fractured Atlas 501(c)(3)
The 90-Second Newbery Film Festival (founded in 2011) is an annual video contest in which kid filmmakers create weird short movies that tell the entire stories of Newbery-winning books in about 90 seconds.
Ever since 1922, the Newbery Medal has been recognized as the most prestigious award in children’s literature. But any classic book, no matter how worthy and somber, turns into something fresh and bonkers when compressed into 90 seconds. Here are 25 standouts from the hundreds of kid-made videos we’ve received over the years.
The best of each year’s movies are shown at free yearly screenings across the country, in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Portland, San Antonio, Minneapolis, and many other cities–co-hosted by author James Kennedy (The Order of Odd-Fish) and other children’s authors. These free shows combine screenings of the kids’ movies with comedy cabaret bits, and have been a smash hit from the start, with crowds of hundreds, including the young filmmakers themselves.
