Parking rates for zoned and leased parking on the Capitol Campus increased $5 a month on July 1, 2005.
The rate increase, the first campus-wide since 1992, applies to about 4,500 parking customers who park at garages and surface parking lots on the East and West campuses.
Rates are now $20 a month for zoned parking and $25 for leased parking. The fees are automatically deducted from an employee’s paycheck twice a month.
The first deduction for the higher rate will be from the July 25 paycheck.
No other rate increases are scheduled for employees during the 2005-2007 biennium.
Even with the increase, campus parking fees remain more than 50 percent below the local market average for comparable parking facilities. The Department of General Administration manages parking on campus.
The rate increase is necessary to:
— Meet the Legislature’s requirement that parking fees cover the cost of parking services.
— Pay for a portion of the maintenance and operation of campus parking facilities, which have been subsidized by agency rent payments.
— Pay for debt obligations related to current improvements to the Plaza Garage.
The increase comes after two public hearings and consideration of more than 400 comments that General Administration received in 2004.
The department has also had its first regular meeting with a 15-member parking advisory committee, made up of customer representatives from various state agencies. The GA-sponsored committee will help provide guidance on future parking concerns.
