Cascade Warbirds members will be flying their aircraft in a special formation over Puget Sound cities on Friday May 8 to honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Victory in Europe. The local event is part of a national effort by the Veterans Airlift Command’s Tribute Wing and is being coordinated by Cascade Warbirds Commander John “Smokey” Johnson.
The formation of nearly a dozen airplanes plan to depart Arlington Airport shortly before noon and fly a route over Highway 99 south over the cities of Marysville, Everett, Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline, Seattle, Burien, Tukwila, SeaTac, Des Moines, Federal Way, Fife, Tacoma, and winding up just south of Joint Base Lewis McChord. Weather permitting, of course.
The Veterans Airlift Command Tribute Wing provides central scheduling for event flyovers. These include memorial missing man flights, parade or sporting events, fly-ins, or airshows.
The VAC also provides free private air transportation to combat wounded soldiers/veterans, and their families or medical or other compassionate purposes through a national network of aircraft owners and pilots.
Most of the volunteers of this memorial flight are members of Cascade Warbirds.
Cascade Warbirds is Squadron #2 of EAA Warbirds of America and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of local aviation enthusiasts, many of whom are pilot-owners of historic military aircraft. With over 250 members and the largest squadron in Warbirds of America, Cascade Warbirds is centered in the Puget Sound area. It meets at the Museum of Flight in Seattle from October until flying weather returns in April. Its mission is to promote and encourage the flying preservation and display of Warbird aircraft (Keep ‘em Flying), to honor Veterans, and to engage in aviation education.
