You are invited to celebrate one year of Spaceworks Tacoma installations, residencies, and creative enterprises on Aug. 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at their newest location, 1310-1316 Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Way.
“Spaceworks has had an amazing first year and we’re throwing a block party to celebrate!” said Tacoma Arts Administrator Amy McBride. “This program has been successful at enlivening empty storefronts in downtown Tacoma and we’re thrilled to expand to the Hilltop neighborhood.”
Four new storefront spaces will open with performances and demonstrations throughout the evening including dance, theatre, music, visual art and a few surprises presented by current Spaceworks projects Fab-5, N. Dybevik Co., Toy Boat Theatre Company and neighboring arts organization DASH Center for the Arts. Food from Taqueria Las Torres taco truck will be available for purchase throughout the evening.
After the public celebration, Fulcrum Gallery will host Hilltopatomic, an evening of live video, fine art and performance featuring indie music, poetry, spoken word and urban electronic music. The gallery is located at 1308 MLK Way. Doors open at 8 p.m. and there will be a $5 cover charge for those 21 and older. For more information, visit http://www.fulcrumtacoma.com .
Spaceworks Tacoma is a joint initiative of the City of Tacoma and Shunpike designed to activate empty storefronts and vacant space in downtown Tacoma. The initiative makes no- and low-cost temporary space available to artists, creative entrepreneurs, organizations and community groups and allows a diverse range of art installations and performances, artist residencies, creative enterprise and events to occur.
