The Pierce County ferry Steilacoom returned to service before noon yesterday following repairs to an air compressor. Crew members were unable to start the engines or shift gears, and the ferry was unable to make scheduled morning runs to Anderson and Ketron islands.
The Steilacoom, which carries 30 vehicles and 149 passengers, is standing in for the Christine Anderson, the county’s main ferry which went into dry dock Monday for routine inspection and maintenance as required by the U.S. Coast Guard. The 213-foot vessel will be out of service for approximately two weeks.
