When Americans turn 65 years old, they are expected to be experts in Medicare. That’s rarely the case and in many cases seniors pay the cost.
A free workshop called “Introduction to Medicare” provides an overview of the basics of the Medicare program. The workshop will be held Sat., April 25, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at The Villas at Union Park, 2010 S. Union Avenue in Tacoma. No reservations are required.
The presentation will survey the scope of services provided by the Medicare Program, including the “Welcome to Medicare” benefits, various supplemental insurance coverages that work with Medicare, and preventive services. Participants will also learn about Medicare’s coverage of long-term care, prescription drugs and more.
There will be plenty of time for participants to ask questions. And resources and opportunities for individuals to address detailed concerns will also be offered.
“There is an expectation that seniors will be very proficient with Medicare when they become eligible,” said Sally Nixon, manager of Pierce County Aging and Long Term Care. “The reality is much different. This program offers the chance for individuals to get to know Medicare in simple terms so that they will be better able to make the most out of their Medicare coverage as well as not expect too much from Medicare.”
The workshop is sponsored by SHIBA — the Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors – and the Pierce County Aging and Disability Resource Center.
