Pierce Countys long-awaited Cross-Base Highway (SR 704) is a major step closer to construction following issuance of the Record of Decision by the Federal Highway Administration. The ROD is the final action in the projects environmental documentation phase and clears the way for engineering and right of way acquisition to begin.
The estimated $180 million project, which would provide direct access between Interstate 5 and the Frederickson Employment Center in central Pierce County, is scheduled for construction between 2007 and 2011 if funding is available.
The Cross-Base Highway was proposed more than 20 years ago. Serious discussion and planning began in 1990, and the EIS process began in 1995.
