After three years of planning and two years of construction, the Fort Steilacoom Park improvement project is completed. The “new” park is ready for public use.
Project partners Lakewood and Pierce County will dedicate the $2.5 million project at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22 in a public event at the park, at 87th Avenue Southwest and Steilacoom Boulevard. The program calls for welcoming comments by Lakewood City Manager Andrew Neiditz and brief speeches by County Executive John W. Ladenburg, County Councilmember Dick Muri, Lakewood Mayor Claudia Thomas, Steilacoom Mayor Ron Lucas and Partners for Parks board member Helen McGovern.
The improvements include: Baseball field rehabilitation; Three new soccer fields; New parking area; New restroom facility; Entrance landscaping; New pathways.
The City of Lakewood and Pierce County each appropriated more than $1 million towards the improvements, and the Town of Steilacoom, Partners for Parks and the Washington State Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation provided additional resources.
