American drivers were hit last week with an all-time high gasoline price, the federal government said Monday.
The national price for regular unleaded gasoline averaged a record $1.728 a gallon, up 44 cents from a year ago, based on a weekly survey of service stations by the Energy Departments Energy Information Administration.
That is the highest price for gasoline since mid-May 2001, when it was $1.713 a gallon.
