The Hylebos Bridge, which spans the Hylebos Waterway on the east side of the Tacoma Tideflats, will re-open on Monday, City of Tacoma officials announced today. The rehabilitation work to return the bridge to its regular operating conditions is complete. The rehabilitation included structural and mechanical replacements and repairs, electrical system replacements and repairs, and improvements to the existing stormwater system. In early 2001, a drive shaft on the northeast section of the movable bridge deck failed, causing the bridge to become inoperable. In order to allow ship navigation on the Hylebos Waterway, cables were used to hold both sections of the bridge deck in the open position.
