Leadership changes on Pierce County council committees

Three of the Pierce County Council’s five policy committees will have new chairmen in 2009.

The council approved its standing and select committee roster Jan. 20, naming Councilmember Shawn Bunney (District 1) as chair of the Economic and Infrastructure Development Committee and Councilmember Terry Lee (District 7) as chair of the Community Development Committee. The Economic and Infrastructure Development Committee deals primarily with road projects, public works, and utilities, and the Community Development Committee concentrates on land-use planning, zoning, growth management, and environmental issues.

New Council Chair Roger Bush (District 3) assumes leadership of the Rules and Operations Committee, which sets the agenda for the full council and refers and schedules legislation. Also at Tuesday’s meeting, councilmembers decided who among them would serve on the county’s 37 external boards and commissions.

The schedule and membership of the council’s committees – all of which meet in the Council Chambers (930 Tacoma Ave. S., Room 1045, Tacoma) – is as follows:

— Rules and Operations (meets Mondays at 10 a.m.) – Roger Bush, chair; Terry Lee, vice chair; Dick Muri

— Community Development (meets first and third Mondays at 1:30 p.m.) – Terry Lee, chair; Shawn Bunney, vice chair; Roger Bush, Tim Farrell, Barbara Gelman

— Economic and Infrastructure Development (meets first and third Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m.) – Shawn Bunney, chair; Joyce McDonald, vice chair; Roger Bush, Terry Lee, Dick Muri

— Public Safety and Human Services (meets second Mondays at 1:30 p.m.) – Barbara Gelman, chair; Tim Farrell, vice chair; Terry Lee, Joyce McDonald, Dick Muri

— Select Committee on Emergency Preparedness (meets fourth Mondays at 1:30 p.m.) – Roger Bush, chair; Dick Muri, vice chair; Joyce McDonald, Anna Graham (council staff), Susan Long (council staff)

— Performance Audit (external oversight committee – usually meets Thursdays as needed) – Dick Muri, chair; Shawn Bunney, Timothy M. Farrell
