A new summer program at Bates Technical College will give middle and high school students an opportunity to explore career options during three-day Career Camps in late June and mid July. Bates is offering the camps at no charge to students in all Pierce County school districts.
Camp No. 1 for 11th grade students — The first camp will operate from June 28 through June 30, and targets students who will be entering the 11th grade this fall.
Camp No. 2 for ninth grade students — A second camp for students entering the ninth grade this fall will run from July 12 through July 14.
Students will spend a full day, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at each of the three Bates campuses. Tours of career training areas at each campus will be included, with lunch provided all three days:
Day 1 Downtown Campus — Career training areas include advanced technologies and computer sciences, administrative and legal office assistants, apparel construction, culinary, engineering, barbering, cosmetology, dental, practical nursing, hearing instrument technology, food marketing, HVAC, sheet metal, manufacturing technology, marketing and sales.
Day 2 South Campus — Career training areas include automotive, auto body, biotechnology, boat building, carpentry, culinary, diesel mechanic, electrical construction, facilities maintenance, fire service, power sports, truck driving, vehicle parts and accessories marketing, welding.
Day 3 Mohler Campus — Career training areas include audio / sound technology, broadcast production, digital media, and KBTC television.
“This is an exciting new way for students to get a first-hand look at a wide variety of career options available to them in a short amount of time, including those in non-traditional jobs,” says Lexine Torres, Bates Technical High School Counselor. “Our faculty will serve as Career Camp Counselors, and we are looking forward to three fun and informative days.”
