More than 2,000 volunteers are expected to get their hands dirty for Parks Appreciation Day on Sat., April 21. Pierce County Parks and Recreation will be among 16 jurisdictions and organizations hosting clean-ups at 43 sites from 9 a.m. to noon. Participating county-owned sites are the Central Meadow at Chambers Creek Regional Park and Ashford County Park. Volunteers will spread bark, prune trees and shrubs, pull weeds, pick up trash, and plant flowers and trees.

“People love their community parks, and this is a great opportunity for individuals, families and groups to donate three hours of hard work to support these treasures,” said Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. “Parks Appreciation Day instills a strong sense of community among families and neighbors, and I’m proud that so many Pierce County residents are willing to burn a few calories to keep their parks clean and accessible.”

This marks the 11th year that people throughout the county have come together to do some spring cleaning at local parks. Last year’s Parks Appreciation Day attracted 2,500 volunteers.

Preregistration is not required at either of the two sites hosted by Pierce County Parks and Recreation. Volunteers should just check in with the site leader and start working. Central Meadow is located next to Chambers Bay Golf Course, 6320 Grandview Dr. W, University Place. Ashford County Park is located at 29700 SR 706 E, Ashford.

Volunteers are asked to bring yard tools that are clearly labeled, warm clothing and enthusiasm.
