Lorna Ovena, recent past chair of Tacoma Community Colleges Board of Trustees, has been named recipient of the Outstanding Advocate for Equity Award by the Washington state Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges (TACTC). Ovena received the award May 3.
The Outstanding Advocate for Equity Award recognizes an individual who has shown commitment to equity issues in the community and technical college system.
Ovena, a human resource specialist, was appointed by Gov. Gary Locke to TCCs Board of Trustees in 1999. Just recently, she left the TCC Board to become director of human resources at Highline Community College.
It was a particular honor for me to receive the equity award because this is an area in which I feel so passionate, said Ovena. It motivates me to continue working on multicultural understanding.
According to John Lantz, TCC trustee, Lorna has been a model trustee who is deserving of this recognition. She motivates all of the trustees to do a little more and educates us about the issues at hand.
